Ronaldo too much for Spain too handle

WOOOOOOOOOOOW! It had it all! What a way to end match day 2!

This match looked to have a cagey start to it, but the Ballon d'or winner would have none of it. Running right at his club mate Nacho, a few step overs and he was felled.

The referee called it and penal... Ronaldo scored it.

Game on.

Wheeling away after giving Portugal the lead

Spain didn't have the luxury of playing a slow, possession game and were forced to respond by the goal. Pushing players forward, they were caught on the counter twice with Goncalo Guedes failing to capitalise both times. The Spaniards would eventually get in the game, Iniesta in the heart of it getting past two defenders, passing to Silva who could only win a corner.

The equaliser wasn't to come from tiki-taka football though, a long ball from Busquets had Costa bullying Pepe then turning Fonte inside out before putting a low shot past Patricio in the 24th minute. VAR was used to check if the challenge on Pepe was a foul but the goal stood.

Diego hitting the ball past helpless Portuguese defenders

A few minutes later, Isco threatened to score with a fierce shot which struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced off the line as goal-line technology (GLT) showed. Iniesta was pulling the strings again interplaying with Costa and Alba who cut it back for Iniesta who could only drag his shot inches wide. Portugal tried to keep the ball for a minute, to get a breather which was clearly needed and then another break happened for them in Ronaldo.

Just on the stroke of halftime, Ronaldo holding off a challenge from Pique drills a left footed shot at De Gea who should make a routine save but makes a huge mistake, palming the ball into the net. Half time 2-1 Portugal.

Portugal start the second half and it's more of the same as we're camped in Portugal's side of the pitch Isco and Iniesta moving the ball around looking to puncture a well-organized defence.

It didn’t take long as a foul committed on Iniesta sparked a fire. Silva's free kick in the 55th minute was short to Koke who clipped a pass to Busquets, nodding back across goal to which Costa reacted first. He stabbed the ball home. 2-2. Costa and Ronaldo both on a Hattrick at the moment.

Five minutes later, Nacho got his redemption with a stunner. Clearance deflecting of Carvalho falling towards the edge of the box. Nacho cut it sweet though as it swept past Patricio in goal. Spain led 3-2.

Spain seemed to take the foot off the gas to settle the game down, less intensity showing but Portugal struggled to take advantage. The sheer quality difference showing there. Spain began to pass around, dancing round the Portuguese.

88 minutes with the game almost done Ronaldo steps up to rescue his team with a glorious glorious free kick, reminiscent of the goal aginst Portsmouth in '09 from a similar position. Ronaldo curls it up and around the wall into the net.

This guy is an absolute beast! He just doubled his WC tally in this match alone.
